For years the Department of Forestry has protected this vital resource through fire prevention and suppression efforts. Water resources have always been part of the multiple use management concept of forestry. As a continuous part of its service to Virginia landowners, the Board suggested specific recommendations for Best Management Practices be part of every forest management plan prepared for landowners. Hopefully this will encourage landowners to incorporate Best Management Practices as a requirement in timber sale contracts and land disturbing activities.
State Forester Jim Gamer says “the Department of Forestry will target landowners for advice who sell timber without a professional forester’s recommendation.” The State Forester will also develop a progress reporting system for annual water quality improvements.
