“Who would want to drive to Rappahannock County if they couldn’t see the mountains for the signs? It would be the end of the county’s tourist business,” maintained Mike Massie.

And to protect the scenic vistas that are Rappahannock’s biggest tourist attraction, the Planning Commission last week recommended denial of a special exception application for a sign on Route 211 giving directions to a Flint Hill restaurant.

“It’s difficult to describe how to get there. . .We are off the beaten track,” said Sheila O’Brien, proprietor of the School House Restaurant. “And 211 has a lot of traffic,” she said, adding the new sign would alert motorists traveling the arterial highway that there’s a restaurant nearby.
