about? Pines were first decorated at Christmastime in the mid-16th century. The Germans decorated trees at Easter, and this was a natural extension of that custom.
Other countries were slow to pick up the tradition. There was no mention of Christmas trees in Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” written in the mid-19th century. They were still considered an eccentric extravagance. Soon merchandising took hold in America. By the late 1800’s, Christmas trees were an American rage—bigger and more laden, the better.
Christmas trees are almost as varied as snowflakes. Decorations aside, there are more than 55 species of pine in the United States alone, most of which would make lovely Christmas trees. Noble, Douglas and Scotch are a few of the favorites.
Choosing and decorating your Christmas tree initiates the holiday season for the whole family. One way to make this a bona fide adventure is to cut your own tree.
