“While it’s true that holiday weekends are generally no more ‘deadly’ in terms of fatalities thin many other weekends,” said Col. Suthard, “the number of vehicles using our highways certainly increases', and congestion along major thoroughfares is not unusual. It is critically important that motorists allow' plenty of time to reach their destina-. tions, use their safety belts and re-; frain from drinking and driving.”
Last year during the holiday period, 17 people were killed on Virginia’s highways. At least six of these deaths occurred in alcohol-rfe-' lated crashes, and of the 14 non-pedestrian fatalities, only one was' known to be wearing safety re1; straints.
According to VSP records?, troopers patrolled 143,311 miles diir-' ing the 1987 Thanksgiving Day holiday period and assisted 2,55l‘ stranded or otherwise distressed motorists. They also arrested or is1- ; sued summonses to 3,336 motorist's including 1,076 for speeding, 481 for reckless driving, 86 for drinking and driving, and 1,066 for other hazartlous violations. 1
