“These are the values and principles that I want to take to the governor’s office. But there is another very important reason I am running for governor. I sense that the Republican Party is headed toward a bitterly divisive campaign for the nomination. That type of campaign will tear us apart, and certainly hand the governor’s office to the Democrats for the third consecutive time,” Mr. Guest said.
He promised a positive campaign, in which he intends to stress two things, “issues and unity.” He invited his likely opponents, Congressman Stan Parris (8th, Va.), former Virginia Attorney General Marshall Coleman and retiring U.S. Senator Paul Trible, “to do the same for the sake of our party and the sake of Virginia.”
Sen. Trible and Rep. Parris have already announced their candidacy for the governorship. Mr. Coleman will become the fourth formal candidate next week, during a three-day statewide campaign trip.
