Claude I. Guinn of Culpeper was presented with the Medal of Honor from the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
The DAR Medal of Honor is presented to “persons who have exhibited the highest qualities of leadership, trustworthiness and patriotism and who, by his or her service, has made an outstanding or lasting contribution to the community or to the nation.” The NSDAR national headquarters must also approve all recipients.
“Mr. Guinn,” a Culpeper chapter spokesman said, “certainly meets all these qualifications.”
A Culpeper native, Mr. Guinn is a retired Army major and postmaster who now devotes his time to community service. For 40 years he has been the moving force behind , the town’s Fourth of July celebration, as well as the catalyst for the Memorial Day and Veterans’ Day observances at the Culpeper National Cemetery.
He organized the Friends of the Culpeper Town and County Library and has been the mainstay of the organization’s semi-annual book sale, the proceeds of which are used for various library projects. Mr. Guinn has also made his time and knowledge available to the many commu
