Employment begins at the State Police Academy with a week of orientation and preliminary training. This is followed by one to three months in the field working with an experienced trooper who has been designated as field training officer (FTO) and 21 weeks of basic training back at the academy: Upon graduation, troopers work with an FTO for another two or more weeks.
The Department’s Career Progression Program features four classifications for troopers with a salary range of $19,812 to $35,368 (there is an additional 20 percent added for troopers stationed in certain areas of Northern Virginia). Several areas of specialization are available for troopers to pursue such as the Executive Protection Unit which provides security for the Governor and his immediate family, the K-9 program, tactical and scuba teams and motorcycle patrol.
