RICHMOND — Colonel R.L. Suthard, Superintendent of the Virginia State Police, announced today that the Department will participate in Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the Thanksgiving Day holiday period.
Operation C.A.R.E. is a statesponsored national program begun in 1977 and designed to reduce crashes, injuries and deaths during the major holiday periods of Memorial Day, July 4 and Labor Day.
The program has been expanded to include Thanksgiving Day weekend which begins this year at 6 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 23 and continues through midnight, Sunday, Nov. 27.
Virginia’s involvement in Operation C.A.R.E. includes increasing the number of troopers patrolling certain sections of the interstate, primary and secondary roads where experience indicates high traffic volume and/or high crash frequency can be anticipated.
The Department’s objective is to encourage motorists to comply with state traffic laws by increasing the visibility of troopers.
