ginia highway officials expect more individuals and groups to join the effort as work of the program spreads. Currently, nearly 40 groups have pledged to adopt more than 100 miles of Virginia’s roads.
For the organizations which have agreed to participate, it is a way of providing a service to the community. For the transportation department, it means that men and equipment can be freed to tend to more urgent tasks along the highway. For passing motorists, be they local residents or visitors, the result is scenic vistas free of unsightly trash.
A spokesman for the highway department said that there are still plenty of roads waiting to be adopted by local organizations or individuals. Any group which is interested in joining the program should contact Ben Atkins at the VDOT Warrenton residency (703-3472834).
