Litter control is a costly part of the highway department’s budget. Last year VDOT spent $4.3 million and 430,000 manhours cleaning up trash along the state’s roads.
To illustrate the magnitude of the litter problem in the Commonwealth, the trash collected by VDOT last year would take one person, working around the clock at a rate of $10 per hour, 49 years to pick up.
Under the Adopt a Highway program, volunteers agree to keep at least two miles of primary or secondary roadway cleared of litter for two years, scheduling cleanup days at least four times each year. VDOT will provide the group with safety training, orange reflective vests, trash bags and signs to be posted warning motorists that a cleanup is in progress.
