Rappahannock’s third Community Recycling Day was an amazing success! According to the infamous clipboard, 94 households participated this time, compared with 64 last month and 37 in September.
I would like to apologize for the tardiness of the Piedmont Recycling truck, but it was due to circumstances beyond my control.
As the county’s litter coordinator, I am thrilled that the recycling program has been so successful thus far. Not only does it spare the landfill from items which are reusable, thereby saving space and prolonging its life, but it also serves the very important purpose of bringing people with varied interests and backgrounds together who are willing to work together toward a common goal.
This past Saturday I felt as though I was the host of a social hour -rather than coordinating a recycling collection day. Some people greeted each other with hugs, while others engaged in lively conversation on a wide variety of topics. Dinner invitations were offered and promises of “We’ll have to get together” were made. Despite the chilly, rainy weather, people went out of their way to help each other.
