These gifts from your kitchen might be fruit cakes baked in coffee cans for friends who have asked for the recipe. This would be something to be enjoyed during the holidays and for years to come if you include the recipe. A home-baked loaf of bread becomes a gourmet's delight when it's accompanied by a glass of jelly. For understated elegance in gift giving, use goblets rather than jelly glasses as containers, then top them with a snowy froth of whipped paraffin. Homemade candies, spreads, and dips to help out on holiday tables — all of these tell the recipients that you cared enough about them to give the very best — something of yourself.
Friendship loaf 1-1/2 c. coarsely chopped w alnuts 1 Tbsp. melted butter 1 c. granulated sugar 2 tsp. cinnamon 3 c. sifted all-purpose flour 4-12 tsp. baking powder 1-1/2 tsp. salt 1/4 c. shortening 1 egg 1-1/4 c. milk Set oven for 350 degrees. Toss walnuts with melted butter. Add 1 4 c. sugar and cinnamon; coat walnuts well and set aside. Resift flour with remaining 3 4 c. sugar, baking powder and salt; cut in shortening. Beat egg lightly and combine with milk. Stir into dry mixture just until all of '* flour is moistened. Reserve 1 4 c. spiced nut meats for top of loaf; add remainder to batter and mix lightly. Spoon into greased 9x5.\4-inch loaf pan. Sprinkle with remaining 14 c. walnuts. Let stand 15 minutes, then bake in preheated oven 65 to 70 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes, then turn out on rack to cool. Banana bread 1-12 c. all-purpose flour 12 c. sugar 2 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 12 tsp. salt 12 c. wheat germ 3 medium, very- ripe bananas, mashed (about 1 cup) 1/4 c. buttermilk 14 c. oil 4 egg whites Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt.
