School screening, assessments
The Rappahannock County Public Schools will offer screenings and assessments for all children, from birth through age 21, who are suspected of having learning problems, including speech, hearing, vision, developmental delays or behavior problems. This screening is provided at no cost to parents as part of a program to detect learning problems as early as possible, when their effects can be minimized. Screening will be conducted each weekday during the last two weeks in September at the elementary school, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. No appointment is needed. JaneClatterbuck, Seventh District Congressman D. French Slaughter Jr.'s district representative, will make her monthly visit to Rappahannock County on Wednesday, Sept. 20. She will be at the courthouse in Washington from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Residents who wish to speak with Mrs. Clatterbuck about problems of a federal nature, or comment about issues under consideration by the U.S. Congress, are urged to come and talk with her. Apple price hotline
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services has instituted a new toll-free telephone line with the latest news on apple pricing and movement. The number is (800) 552-5089. Provided through VDACS's Market News Service, the hotline is available for use by apple growers, wholesalers, salesmen and other interested parties. Updates will be prepared each Monday, Wednesday and Friday through the fall apple harvest season. Firefighting course begins Sept. 19
Volunteer firefighters in Rappahannock County are invited to attend a Firefighter I course, which will be held at the Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department on West Davis St. beginning Tuesday, Sept. V19. The course, which is the basic level of certification through the National Fire Protection Association, includes training in "fire behavior and safety, use of selfT Contained breathing apparatus, basic emergency medical care, familiarization With firefighting equipment, and "live fire" exercises.
