NOTICE TO THE PUBLIC

OF A HEARING TO CONSIDER

A PROPOSED DECREASE IN THE

FREE CALL ALLOWANCE

FOR TELEPHONE DIRECTORY ASSISTANCE

On May 9, 1989, the Virginia Telephone Association (VTA), on behalf of the twenty local exchange telephone companies providing service in Virginia, filed an application with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (Commission) to decrease the existing free call allowance for directory assistance from eight per month to two per month for residential customers and to zero per month for business customers. The charge for each directory assistance call beyond the limit would remain at $.29.

The Commission has scheduled a public hearing on the VTA Application for Thursday, November 30, 1989 at 10:00 a.m. in the Commission's 13th floor Courtroom, Jefferson Building, Bank and Governor Streets, Richmond, Virginia.

On or before October 16, 1989, persons desiring to participate as protestants, as defined in Rule 4:6 of the Commission's Rules of Practice and Procedure (Rules) and to present evidence and cross-examine witnesses shall file an original and 15 copies of a notice of protest, as described in Rule 5:16 (a), with the Clerk of the Commission at the address set forth below and serve a copy on the VTA at its offices, Suite 1420,700 Building, 700 East Main Street, Richmond, Virginia 23219-2662.

Any person wtio expects to submit evidence, cross-examine witnesses, or otherwise participate in the proceedings as a protestant pursuant to Rule 4:6 shall file, on or before November 7, 1989, an original and 15 copies of a protest with the Clerk of the Stale Corporation Commission, c/o Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond, Virginia 23216, referring to Case No. PUC890025, and shall simultaneously send a copy thereof to the VTA at their address listed above. The protest shall set forth (i) a precise statement of the interest of the protestant in the proceedings, (ii) a full and clear statement of the facts which the protestant in the proceedings is prepared to prove by competent evidence and (iii) a statement of the specific relief sought and the legal basis therefor. Any corporate entity that wishes to submit evidence, cross-examine witnesses, or otherwise participate as a protestant must be represented by legal counsel in accordance with the requirements of Rule 4:8.

On or before November 7,1989, each protestant shall file with the Clerk of the Commission anoriginal and 15 copies of the prepared testimony and exhibits the protestant intends to present at the November 30, hearing, and shall simultaneously mail a copy to the VTA and other protestants.

Any person desiring to comment in writing on the application may do so on or before November 30,1989, by directing such comments to the Commission, c/o Document Control Center, P.CL Box 2118, Richmond, Virginia 23216, referring to Case No. PUC890025. Any person desiring to make a statement at the public hearing, either for or against the application, need only appear in the Commission's courtroom at 9:45 a.m. on the day of the hearing and identify himself to the Bailiff as a pubic witness.
