In closing, I want to take issue with a premise set forth in the “issues” editorial I referred to: what is, the notion that a delegate’s role is simply to make laws. I view the delegate’s responsibility as much more. The delegate is a community leader, the district’s representative and spokesman in Richmond, and its advocate before State agencies and the Executive Branch.
We are in competition with 99 i other districts throughout the State for funding and services. When our district has a need, it is our delegate’s job to get results from the State for our constituents. I started the Air and Water Pollution Hotline because there was no means for getting the many complaints and reports of local citizens to the State agencies responsible for enforcement.
I was, in effect, doing the delegate’s job, and I will continue to perform in this manner after I am elected.
