Because of the complexity of the state corrections system and the limited time frame in which it had to work, the committee hesitated to make further specific recommendations before more study is conducted.
The preliminary report read: “The committee feels strongly that a number of areas require significantly more study before more specific recommendations are made, but they hold potential for crowding reduction or improved inmate management. I hese areas include, drug treatment; education; work opportunities: including Virginia Correctional Enterprises; vocational training; and increased funding for community based programming.”

survival class
A weekend Wilderness Survival Skills Course will once again be given by the Blue Ridge Group of the Virginia Chapter of the Sierra Club. The dates will be Sept. 29, 30 and Oct. 1.
All basic survival skills will be taught, including survival medicine, making fire without matches, survival shelter, edible wild plants, survival hunting methods, how to find potable water and many other skills.
