gathered to watch the scrimmage. “Go, Marie,” “Shoot, Shannon,” and “All right. Celeste” came from the benches and hillside. At half time it was decided that the alumni would play bare chested, while the varsity played in shirts. “Take it off, Marie,” someone yelled.

But another spectator cut in with, “That’s OK, everyone knows which team she’s on.

The varsity players were clearly in better shape than the alumni; they also had many more substitutes available. “Scott, do you want to play wing? It’s shady over here,” Jim Racer called out, trying to get a break from the constant running.

“Doug, you said you’d take the ball and go. You’ve had it twice and done nothing,” apprentice statistician Alice Reeve called out.

“For some reason everyone else is faster than me,” Doug McCabe replied.

But the younger varsity players were impressed with the veterans, some of whom have been helping with practices since the pre-season started. “They’re tough,” one complained to the coach.

“They’re just a bunch of old guys we pulled out of a bar,” Coach Dietz reassured him.

“Does anyone want a sub?” a player on the sidelines called out, hoping to get back into the game.

“Sure, make mine Italian,” was one of the replies.

It was a fun afternoon, with one bit of sour grapes. “They won’t let guys try out for girls’ volleyball,” Goalie Philip Daczewitz complained. And that’s true. Boys are not allowed, by Virginia High School League rules, to play on girls’ teams.
