WATER:
The Virginia Water Resource Center reports that safe drinking water will not come cheaply. The Virginia Health Department plans to ask the 1990 General Assembly for 96 additional staff members at a cost of $4.5 million. The request is the ensure effective oversight of the 1986 Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) amendments. Two major requirements of the SDWA amendments are for filtration at all surface water systems and disinfection at all surface and groundwater systems. Filtration will be extremely expensive for the few small systems that do not already have it.
