Education The local dropout rate is an absolute disgrace. The future for dropouts-is bleak, and the strain placed on' society’s resources by dropouts is immense. We have got to get aggressive in our efforts to keep these kids in school, or to see that they get GEDs.
The Legislature can provide incentives, including tougher drivers’ license measures, such as if you are a dropout, no diploma or GED means no license up to 18 years of age, period. From 18 to 25, no diploma or GED means a restricted license (work and other essential transportation — no pleasure driving).
At the same time, our schools must pursue excellence. Math and science classes and advance placement programs must be encouraged, promoted, and expanded. Our future depends on the excellence of today’s students, and our Legislature must fund the pursuit of excellence.
Law Enforcement and Facilities Everyone seems to agree that the ultimate solution to the national drug problem depends on educatior and changed attitudes regarding drug consumption.
