The stories, unfortunately, have a sad but familiar ring to Sheriff Woodward. “You see how someone can be a fugitive and no one ever knows it. As long as they obey the law, and especially if they seem like a nice person, there’s no reason to check them out.
“If there had been one warrant issued for one of the bad checks that he wrote, or if he had gotten a speeding ticket, someone would have checked him out.”
But using bravado and bluster to keep everyone strung along, Sheriff Woodward said, Godwin was able to keep anyone from looking too closely at his dealings. Arid when people finally started getting suspicious, “He was slick enough that he knew when things started getting sticky that it was time for him to split. ”
So far, the Sheriffs Department has no leads as to Godwin’s whereabouts.
