In 1982, when soccer was first added to Rappahannock’s sports schedule, Marie Davis wanted to try out for the team. That was all right with Coach Glenn Davis, but when he asked Principal Robert Chappell, Marie was turned down.
“I thought at that time that while it was all right for girls and boys to play soccer together as elementary students, by high school when some of the boys are such big bruisers, it wasn’t wise. I as principal and John Toth, as athletic director, said, ‘No’,” Mr. Chappell said recently.
“But that’s why I instituted the volleyball team. Because at that time girls had nothing except cheerleading in the winter, and nowr with softball added the situation is more or less even,” he explained.
Marie practiced with the team and kept statistics at the games. During her high school career she also did cheerleading, basketball statistics, drama, sang in the chorus and was involved with numerous other school activities. “I went to the state track meet and represented the school in discus and shot put. I was in everything,” she said.
But she did not get to play on her school’s soccer team.
Last spring Celeste Waggoner and Shannon Sause decided they wanted to go out for soccer this fall. They approached Coach Richard Dietz, and he told them it was all right with him. Since there is no comparable sport for girls, he said, they could try. When they approached the school administration, they were successful.
