Bigelow
pleads guilty
Jeffrey A. Bigelow, 27, of Sperryville, pleaded guilty Oct. 19 to a felony charge of conspiracy to possess cocaine.*.
Bigelow was indicted in July, and had been scheduled to stand trial on the charge. An investigation by Capt. Ed Streapy of the Rappahannock County Sheriffs Department discovered that Bigelow and a coconspirator, Joseph Perry, agreed to buy $100 worth of crack cocaine. Bigelow was to buy the drug after they had pooled their money.
According to Commonwealth’s Attorney Peter Luke, under the state criminal conspiracy law it is not necessary to prove that the act of purchasing or possessing the drug was accomplished. “Proving the intent to commit a criminal act is all that is necessary,” he said. The reason for the law is that it is considered more dangerous for more than one person to conspire to commit a criminal act than for a lone individual to break the law.
Bigelow remains free on bond pending sentencing. He must report regularly to a probation officer and submit to random drug testing as a condition of his bond.
