During the debate, sponsored by Viginia Capitol Correspondents Association, each candidate questioned the other’s credentials for the office of governor.
“For the last four years you’ve served as lawyer for Northern Virginia’s biggest land developer, how does this experience qualify you to serve as governor?,” asked Wilder.
“I really resent your suggesting to me that there is something wrong with people contributing to my cam• paign,” Coleman responded defensi• vely. The GOP candidate has . received nearly $1 million from Northern Virginia developer Dwight Schar. “There has never been a hint of scandal or impropriety during my campaign.” 1 “I’m not questioning your character,” said Wilder. “I’m questioning your qualifications.”
Criticizing Wilder for supporting tax increases as state senator and lieutenant governor, Coleman asked, “How can men and women afford you as governor?”
“When I was fighting for tax relief — you were not there,” answered Wilder.
The Democratic candidate has fought for a repeal of the sales tax on food and non-prescription drugs and for tax relief for private pensioners.
Coleman infuriated Wilder when, speaking to a question on affirmative action, he quoted Dr, Martin Luther King Jr.
