“But, I just really love it,” she said of her new occupation, adding with a laugh that there is a great deal more paperwork than she expected.
“That was the deal,” John said of the couple’s first business venture. “Judy is sole proprietor and I do the physical part.”
John Tweel found the church’s restoration has required a great deal of physical work indeed.
“If we would have known how much was going to be involved when we purchased the place, we probably would not have,” John said with a smile, referring to the extensive restoration required to preserve the old church.
And restore is what John and Judy have in mind. “We don’t want to change the place, just put it back to it’s original,” John said.
The interior has been repainted the original color; door mouldings, removed when the door was, have been replaced. The chimney is restored. The wooden ceiling and beams were cleaned and polished to a brilliant shine. The foundation and floor joists, rotted and eaten by termites, have been replaced with new lumber.
Termites were not the only thing John found in the old building. “I found some old whiskey bottles down in the crawl space,” he said with laughter. The bottles date back to the turn of the century and carry the Culpeper Liquior Company emblem. “No one can even remember when that existed,” he added.
“When we moved in, the walls sagged and the floor moved when you walked,” Judy said, adding that a customer once suggested she move a few earthen crocks before they were bounced off their shelf by browsing visitors.
