Beyer for Lt. Gov.
In the tradition of “staying the course” we feel that Donald S. Beyer is the best choice as Virginia’s next lieutenant governor.
Though Mr. Beyer has no experience in government — a fact his opponent has made much of — in this case we don’t see it as much of a problem. State Sen. Edwina Dalton, the Republican nominee, is a freshman senator and also holding her first elected office.
She has made much of her alleged 30 years of experience in state government, but in fact that was served as the wife of former Gov. John Dalton — not exactly the type of front-line experience Virginians should be looking for. She has said much less about the fact that when she was first appointed to the job she promised to serve a full term, a promise since broken by her run for statewide office.
And her record as a senator has been less than stellar: 0 for 24 in legislation passed, and ranked by her collegues as the least effective member of the State Senate. Though on the surface she is energetic and personable, in-depth questions frequently leave the interviewer feeling that her grasp of the issues is tenuous at best.
In Mr. Beyer’s favor, he has built an enormously successful business which stands as a clear and demonstrable credit to his management skills. He .was commended for establishing an anti-drunk driving program among car dealers, and has instituted a “drug-free” policy for his company’s employees.
Mr. Beyer has also extended his belief in the importance of community spirit and civic duty to his company. He has taken the lead in volunteering five hours each week to community service, and he requires a similar committment from his employees.
We feel that Mr. Beyer brings sound business skills and pragmatic judgement to the task of serving as Virginia’s lieutenant governor. He is our choice for the job.
Mary Sue Terry
Though Attorney General Mary Sue Terry was criticized, with some justification, when she was bushwhacked by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on taxation of pensions, in general her performance as the state’s Attorney General has been excellent.
