Meanwhile, Trooper Knick said, both Officer Haines and Deputy Brown locked their brakes as they tried to avoid hitting the swerving pickup. Both cruisers slid off the right side of the road and Deputy Brown’s car struck the right rear end of Officer Haines’ car.
Officer Haines’ crusier had minor damage, Trooper Knick said, while Deputy Brown’s car suffered more extensive damage to the grill, hood and left fender. The pick-up truck was totalled.
The driver and one of the pickup’s passengers tried to run from the scene on foot, but were apprehended. In addition to the reckless driving charge, Trooper Knick said the driver will likely be charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to stop for a police officer, and probably additional offenses. Charges, he added, will likely be filed in more than one jurisdiction since the pursuit crossed town and county lines.
Trooper Knick said that his investigation confirmed that all the police officers involved “were acting within the regulations of the Virginia Code with regard to pursuits with blue lights and sirens.” No charges will be brought against either officer as a result of the accident.
