The volunteers at the Rappahannock Historical Society are frequently called upon to search out the graves of grandparents, even great grandparents of people who are doing genealogical research. Sometimes the grave stone offers the only exact proofs of birth and death and often other clues as wife of....daughter of....or other information.
We now have an extensive inventory of gravesites in the county, but are still missing many.
However, that is not the reason for my letter. I recently took a young man, eager fo find his great grandmother’s grave. It was easily found; but in what condition!
Briars, poison ivy, and even trees grew over the walls and stones. The gate sagged on its hinges and was immoveable. The headstone itself was toppled and fortunately landed face up or we would not have identified it. Power crews had cut bushes and shrubbery in the area and inconsiderately dumped the debris on the graveyard fence itself.
