John and Judy Tweel were looking for a cabin in the woods when they discovered Emmanual Episcopal Church in Sperryville, now known as the Church Mouse Craft and Craft Supply Shop.
According to the couple, it was love at first sight.
“We saw the church and it looked awful,” John Tweel said of their first impression of the unused church. “When we went inside, we knew it was meant to be,” he added, explaining that he and his wife visited Sperryville on their way back from looking at a cabin in the New Market area.
The couple saw that the present Southern Drawl building was for Sale and after a week’s worth of Careful thought, they decided to buy.
“Judy always wanted to have her own shop to sell crafts and craft Stems,” Mr. Tweel said, indicating the Church Mouse’s present objects. “We figured it was ideal. It had a room in the back where we could sleep in on the weekends and Judy could have her shop.”
When the couple returned the following weekend the Southern Drawl building was sold.
“It was so disheartening,” Judy said with a sadness in her voice as she remembered their disappointment.
