He recently sided with the real estate development industry in a growing dispute over land use, saying that he opposed “arbitrary down-zoning.”

Wilder contends, however, that his opponent’s close financial links with a developer who has contributed nearly $1 million is “unprecedented.”

“Great and careful scrutiny [of campaign laws] will follow this election,” said Wilder.

In an election largely characterized by negative campaigning, Wilder must face the possibility that the negatives will stick.

But as he did four years ago, Wilder is taking the risk and putting his faith in Virginia voters.

“I have heard and seen and known the people of Virginia,” he said, “and I trust their judgement.”
