Many people inquiring for the first time about their Social Security •retirement benefits have misconceptions about how their benefits will be computed, said Bruce A. Hundley, Social Security manager in Culpeper.
A question which comes up often: “ts-my benefit amount based on my high five years of work, or my last five years of work?” The answer is “Neither one!” Mr. Hundley said.
Retirement benefits are calculated on the total earnings during a lifetime of work under the Social Security system.
The Social Security Administration encourages people of all ages to become better informed about what to expect in future benefits, Mr. Hundley said. The Personal Earnings and Benefit Estimate Statement (PEBES) provides an individual’s year-by-year record of earnings and estimates of retirement, disability and survivor’s benefits.
To request a PEBES, people can call 1-800-234-5772, or write to Consumer Information Center, Department 55, Pueblo, CO 81009.
Other questions about Social Security can be answered by calling 1800-2345-SSA, Hundley said. The Culpeper Social Security office is located at 806 North Main Street. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
