Students from 11 schools met for a afternoon of competition and fellowship Oct. 21 at Wakefield School’s second annual certamen (Latin contest), geared especially for beginners in classical competition.

The Wakefield JCL (Junior Classical League) hosted Central, Chancellor, Country Day, Culpeper, Handley, Highland, St. Anne’s-Belfield, Stuart’s Draft, Tuckahoe Middle and W.T. Woodson. Competition was for Latin students at Level I, Level II, and Level III and above. For the first time in this area, a Greek competition was held; two Wakefield teams demonstrated a Greek agon to stimulate interest in classical Greek in area schools.

The certamen program across the state, according to Magistra (teacher) Marilyn Welch, not only helps students keep information current; they also learn the basics of good sportsmanship and how to work as team members — the basics of good living. They make friends ’ and have a good time, she added. Several students became reacquainted with friends made this summer at the National JCL Convention. Teachers also have a chance to meet friends and share viewpoints.

As hosts, Wakefield teams competed only when necessary, and they did not compete in the final rounds. However, they worked just as hard as the other students in preparing for competition and had heavy responsibilities, as well, for managing the event.

Selected to represent Wakefield in Latin were, from sixth grade: Jennifer Blount, Shannon Brugh, Kirsten Burton, Christina Cheney, Diana Chow, Stephanie Harre. Welby Lynn and Core; 11; sev enth grade: Meredith Fascett, Colleen Harrell, Tim Inglis, Matthew Kravitz, Jeremy Thorpe and Michael Viega; eighth grade: Daniel Logie and Bucky Dusek and Diana Fry; ninth grade: Samir Suleiman, Bobby Nelson, Denis Houyoux and Stephanie Tomeden; tenth grade: Detra Funk and Kathleen O'Neill; eleventh grade: Locke Bell.
