Next, inspect the machine to make sure there are no cracks or breaks in the metal parts. If there are, you might try welding or bolting them back together so it’s structurally sound, Mr. Hetzel said.
If the machine needs an oil change, take care of that too. “In most cases, anybody who owns a piece of equipment can change the oil,” he said. “The only problem you get is on some of the cheaper mowers, they don’t put a drain plug under the mower deck, and you have to turn the mower upside down to drain the oil. In that case, my suggestion is to run the engine until you’ve used all the gasoline, so the gas tank is empty. ”
Mr. Hetzel said that it’s particularly important to run the gas tank and carburetor dry in machines with two-stroke engines — they're the ones in which the operator mixes oil and gas together.
