pahannock, for reducing brush to wood chips that could be sold or given away for mulch. Currently such debris at the landfill is burned. Burning does not count toward the county’s goal for recycling, but wood chips would have, Mr. McCarthy told the board.
One piece of good news for the supervisors was that work on installing the chairlift for handicapped access is due to start this week and to be finished by next Wednesday.
The news on that front isn’t all good, Mr. McCarthy added, since -the door into the courthouse from the outside ramp is sticking. “It’s a vanity door, and it’s swelling,” Mr. McCarthy explained. It has been cut down to make it fit, but each time it swells up until it is sticking again, he said.
“Look into that, would you, John?” Jackson District Supervisor Ellis Bingham suggested.
“I’ve looked into it, but I can’t see my way out of it,” Mr. McCarthy replied.
Anotljer piece of good news was that the county had been able to get through the start of the new fiscal year by borrowing only $250,000 for one and a half months. Originally the board had feared it might be necessary to borrow $350,000 for up to three months. “The treasurer did a bang-up job of keeping us from having to borrow so much money,” Piedmont District Supervisor Charles K. “Pete” Estes said.
