Following the meeting County Treasurer Frances Foster said that she hoped it would not be necessary to borrow any more, but that more than $2 million in taxes had not yet been paid.
School Superintendent David Gangel talked to the supervisors about the process the school system will be going through to improve reading this year. “You start with research to determine what works,” he said. Dr. Gangel explained that much of that work had already been done, including a trip to the University of Virginia library.
The next step is to review current practices and select the best. He said a committee had already visited one school and would be visiting another. The third step, he explained, was to make decisions on what to try. Those decisions would be made by administrators and teachers and then sent to the School Board for final approval.
