Fauquier County Fire and Rescue joined with fire and rescue companies from Rappahanock County in heading the search. A helicopter equipped with infared censors was brought in from Fairfax County.
The helicopter made one trip down the river, but veered down another branch of the river, missing the boys on its first pass. The canoeists saw the helicopter and waved their Tshirts, said Mrs. Rothrock.
The rescue workers held off on sending a search by foot until the helicopter completed a trace of the river in order not to confuse search efforts, according to Richard Saunders, assistant chief of Fauquier Co. 6.
Armed with flashlights and flares, six rescue searchers — three on each side of the river — were placed on foot at 12:45 a.m. after the helicopter made its first flight over the river.
“Someone is telling us to go eight degrees to the right on CB channel 9,” radioed the helicopter rescue crew at about 1:55 a.m. The boys were expected to be on CB channel 5.
