rSLACKoB U KG — It’s With a sigh of relief that many a homeowner rolls the lawn mower into the garage after the last cutting of the season, but don’t let relief breed laziness, says Virginia Cooperative Extension safety specialist Glen Hetzel.
“It’s important to clean up lawn mowers and other equipment before winter storage, if you want them to work at their maximum efficiency next spring,” he said.
The first thing to do with a mower or other machine is to clean it off, Mr. Hetzel said. “That’s number one,” he said. “Get the hose out, get a brush, get a scraper, whatever it takes to get all the soil, leaves and grass on it, off. Clean it down to the bare metal — this is especially true for the underside of the deck. ”
If there are signs of rust after cleaning, grab a can of paint and spray it. “Don’t worry if it looks the same color as the rest of the machine,” Mr. Hetzel said. “Just put
