Rescue workers searched for 6V2 hours before locating two 16-year-old boys reported missing on the Rappahannock River at about '7:30 p.m. Sunday night.
After setting out on an afternoon canoe trip, James Rothrock of Rappahanock County and Joe Siegman of Haymarket found themselves stranded along the Rappahannock River when nightfall forced them ashore.
The two Randolph Macon classmates were dropped off by Mr. and Mrs. James Rothrock below Route 647 at Flint Hill at about 3 p.m. The parents expected to pick up the boys at about 5 p.m. at the bridge at U.S. 211 on the Rappahannock/Fauquier County line.
“It was a case of miscalculation,” said Mrs. Rothrock later. Originally expecting the trip to take about three hours, she said she has since learned that it is nearly impossible to complete . the trip in under five hours.
Rothrock and Siegman had taken along backpacks and CB radios.
