rezoning

Apparently realizing that their rezoning request was headed for denial, the owners of The Inn at Little Washington amended their application before last Wednesday’s Town Council work session.
The tactic paid off and the scaledback rezoning won approval by a 3-1 split vote.
Patrick O’Connell and Reinhardt Lynch had sought to have all the property they own behind the present Inn rezoned from Village Residential to Village Mixed Use. However, the plan met opposition from the town’s residents as well as its Planning Commission and the council because one of the parcels includes frontage on Gay Street, which is entirely residential except for the county library building.
The Inn planned to use the Gay Street portion of the lot for formal gardens and a gazebo, possibly including several rooms, which would provide a focus for the building’s entrance on that garden side. The architect explained that the gardens and the gazebo would also screen the mass of the main building from the residential Gay Street side.
