The business students at Rappahannock County High School weren’t the only ones getting handson experience in investing in the stock market this year.
Ninth graders in Roger Flinchum’s English classes, tenth graders in Janet Long’s consumer math classes, and fifth, seventh, and 9th through 12th graders in Francis Laimbeer’s computer science classes at Wakefield also participated in a stock market game sponsored locally by the county’s 4-H clubs.
Alice Reeve, Chris Payne, John Mallory, Richie Lillard and Le Roy North, one of the four teams from Mr. Flinchum’s English classes, captured first place in the region when they managed to convert their initial investment of an imaginary $100,000 into a portfolio worth $113,305 in ten weeks’ time.
Each Friday for 10 weeks the team members got together in English class and decided what stocks to buy or sell. They filled out an order form and mailed it to Richmond. The orders were recorded in a computer on Manday and results mailed back to the students who received them the following Wednesday.
