The cool, damp Memorial Day weekend put a damper on many activities, especially for beach-goers. Many farmers are finding it difficult to harvest the hay crops, having to work diligently between rains. However, we’ll be thankful for the rains in a few more weeks.
I’m happy to report that the goslings are alive and well, despite the many foxes nearby. Actually, we’ve enjoyed watching four fox pups playing near their den. While haying we’ve really had to be alert to the quail and fawns hidden in the tall grass. It’s been exciting to witness the birth of calves, as well as the many species of birds being hatched and many have taken their maiden flight already.
One sign of life I am most unhappy to see, though, is the gypsy moth. It sounds like a rain fofest to walk through the wooded areas. They are really taking their toll on the oaks. The tent caterpillars, while not as devastating, have certainly left their mark on many wild cherry trees.
Amissville United Methodist Women along with many area residents are traveling to Manassas this evening, May 31, to enjoy dinner and show at the Hayloft.
