Without it, hundreds of thousands of charitable organizations and small businesses would have to close their doors and millions would be out of work. Would we really be better off without “junk mail”?
Ms. Hathaway complained about the use of trees to print direct mail. I would point out that, according to econmics columnist Warren Brookes, total acreage of forest land in the United States increased nearly ten percent between 1952 and 1987 (the last year for which figures are available), and growing volume of those forests increased 24 percent! The entire increase, by the way, occurred on privately-owned land.
We must not lock our resources away, when we can use them wisely and leave even greater resources for our children.
