Pat Roe’s letter in last week’s “News” started its second paragraph with a sentence that jumps out at me: “Femandina Beach is located on Amelia Island in Nassau (not Nissan!) county. .
I used to know that pleasant area 60 years ago. It was the birthplace of my children’s mother and grandmother and the retirement home of their great-grandfather, former partner of H.M. Hagler, “developer” of Florida’s East Coast from the Georgia line (St. Mary’s River) to Key West.
Samuel Ashe Swann retired to Femandia (a bit inland from Femandina Beach) for more or less the same reasons that enticed Mr. Roe to move there in the early sixties. It was a charming, quiet spot, quite full of history, colorful history, and friendly people, happy in their town.
It was, for me, a delightful change from Washington, D.C. during the usual vacations from St. Albans, the National Cathedral School for Boys, where I was teaching (and watching the Cathedral grow).
Mr. Roe’s fifth paragraph begins: “Any resemblance between Amelia Island then and now is purely coincidental.” It was an arrow through the heart (that was obviously not fatal but compelling to read on
