results are the best the school has received in its six years of participation.

Virginia has one of the largest delegations at the national event, according to Technology Education Association specialist for Virginia Jim Carey, though he added he expected the number to be less this year. Nearly 70 Virginia schools compete on the state leyel — half that many on the national level against an estimated 2,000 plus students total.

At the state level, students compete in more than 45 events yielding over 50 awards and trophies, judged by college, university and high school professionals and business and industry leaders.

With several of those first place trophies belonging to Rappahannock High School youths, Mr. Currie echoes Mr. Vickers’ sentiments on possible success, explaining that competitor Jeremy Tole was confident on his state-level win when he discovered state-level competitive drawings were “actually what he was doing in class at the present time.”

Preparation for the events is done through classroom work, after school activities and regional competitions, this year held the end of March in Fauquier County.

“It’s a lot of hard work,” Joey Dunagan said, one of the youngest to attend state competitions and the only competitor in CADD Level I, on the regional and state levels, and a competitor of other events for Rappahannock, adding that competition is stiff and students must be prepared to win.

A new competition for the school to enter was problem solving — a test of the students’ ability to create, design and put into action an answer to a mechanical problem. Team members for level one consisted of J.C. Welch, Joey Dunagan, Jeff Hines and Chad Vanderkolk. The test — hoisting a one-inch cube over a 12-inch wall and placing it in a bin without using fossil fuels or altering current — took second place on state level.

The team used “a very clever holding device to make it all work,” instructor Currie said.

In problem solving level two, David Barney and Douglas Kilpatrick were considered finalists though they did not receive an award.

In other events, Leory North’s and Randy Early’s bridge building competition ended with disqualification due to missing the length requirement; but the bridge the team built had the highest efficiency of all bridges in the competition.
