The Stock Market Game is sponsored by the Virginia Council on Economic Education and takes place in the fall as well as the spring. Home Extension Agent Helen Smith said she did not find out about the game in time to register teams for the fall, so Rappahannock’s teams participated in the spring game that ran from Feb. 16 to April 26.
Alice reported that many of the teams had had success with the same stocks. “In the fall it was Jaguar and in the spring L A Gear. Some invested in Coca Cola and did wonderfully,” she said.
Asked how she would suggest the team invest differently if they get a chance to play the game again, Alice said they should buy more shares faster.
Mr. Flinchum agreed, “Most that did well started in early buying big and got lucky.” He said one team that had nearly doubled its $100,000 investment reported that by using the same strategy in an earlier game they had finished 71st out of 71 teams. Because of the ten-w eek format of the game, Mr. Flinchum said, “You can’t invest for the long term.”
