tsut politicians are acutely aware that what is said about them, whether in a weekly or metropolitan daily, may possibly be used in their favor or against them in some future campaign.
Virginia political reporting has undergone a sea change since I first got involved in the early 1960’s. In those days the press corps was small and a few reporters, notably Jim Latimer of the Richmond Times-Dispatch and John Daffron of the AP, might be summoned to the Governor1 s Mansion on a Sunday afternoon for an off-the-record chat letting them know what developments could be expected.
In this manner, the controlling Democratic organization sent its signals across the state letting folks know the party line. It was very genteel in the Virginia tradition.
Now there are a few hundred men and women involved to various degrees in chronicling the political scene and the work is more competitive and demanding. As a result, a much stronger adversarial relationship has evolved between press and politicians.
