Peace, he said, has been the real dividend produced by “many years of sacrifice. It has been a dividend -but not without cost.”
But speaking again to those who have defended our freedoms in the past, Mr. Slaughter said, “we were successful. Those who fought and died were successful. Their fight was not in vain.”
The Rev. Jennings Hobson III reminded the gathering that Memorial Day is “a remembrance day — a focus on those who have served and given their lives.”
But the annual observance, usually held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Cemetery in Woodville, is also a memorial service for all those dear to us who have passed away, Rev. Hobson added. “It is for all those who have gone before, and given us what we now enjoy — for which we are grateful.”
Music for the service was provided by the brass section of the Rappahannock County High School band, under the direction of David Orth.
