or cave or if you are caught outside in a storm, finding a low-lying place, a ditch or a depression in the ground. While you may get wet though, lightning is less likely to strike low areas, but rather is attracted to the tallest object in the vicinity.
A wet surface is more likely to carry the electrical charge, and you should not lie flat on the ground, but rather in a knealing position, feet close to your lowered head.
The electrical charge from lightning, with heat possibly reaching 50,000 degrees F — five times that temperature of the sun’s surface — can travel horizontally 10 miles before striking the earth, validating the fact that lightning may strike some miles from its parent cloud.
“Storm with lightning from cloud-to-cloud tend to have longdrawn out thunder,” Dr. Michaels said, adding these were the most common and the least-intense storms.
“Ground-to-cloud lightning tends to be followed by more intense short bursts of thunder,” Dr. Michaels said, explaining these are stronger storms.
“Bolts-out-of-the blue are rare,” he said, adding that most lightning is cloud-to-cloud.
Even when the thunderstorm is not overhead, precautions should be taken.
