You also get to hobnob with powerful and sometimes famous people, get free admittance to many lavish parties and live well off the expense account. And you also have the satisfaction of knowing, whether or not everybody recognizes it, that what you are doing is important because every person from a hamlet to the big city is affected by the political process.
The flip side is that hours are often long and involve working nights and weekends; and you can almost be assured that the politicians you write about are never going to be satisfied with your coverage, no matter how valiantly you strive to be fair.
