In the rumors heard so far the very busy Cruise turns up with more houses and cars and lunches than most of us need, but that’s actors for you. The star of “Rain Man” and “Top Gun:”
• Bought Menlough, the estate on Springs Road at the edge of Warenton once owned by Chad Everett.
• Bought Canterbury, a large estate with a fabulous old house near Fauquier Springs Country Club.
• Bought and has moved into a house on Culpeper Street, the one with the wall around it.
• Was seen in a red car.
• Was seen in a black Porsche in the parking lot of Fauquier National Bank.
• Was seen in a Black porsche with a license plate that reads 1CRUISE.
• Was seen in a black Porsche with a license plate that reads CRUISE1.
• Bought groceries at Giant Food Store.
• Appeared in Giant Food Store, was mobbed, and the store’s management had to call police to pull the crowd of women off of him.
If there’s smoke where there’s fire, Tom Cruise, his brothers, his great grandsons, and his ancestors sack to the Middle Ages have set down roots here.
“If Tom Cruise passed through the portals of this store I would know it,” said Giant Food Store manager Charlie Burtt. “I can guarantee you he has not.”
• Entered Napoleon’s Cafe, with a police officer as protective escort.
• Lunched at Napoleon’s with a real estate agent — and no one recognized him.
A Napoleon’s hostess, with a hungry gleam in her eye: “Oh, I think I would recognize him. I don’t believe he’s been in here.”
Another definite, absolute ironclad straight from the agent’s mouth report: he’s bought Canterbury. Can’t give the agency or the agent — that’s top secret. (Fewer than 8,000 people have heard this same news). Somehow, the reporter guesses the agency (but not the agent). Shock. “You didn’t get it from me!”
The guessed agency, the reporter already knows, is not handling Canterbury. But the calls must go on, it’s the job.
Sue Coe, one of the nation’s most successful real estate agents, number two producer for all of the Mount Vernon Realty offices: “You can put in that story that he is working with me.” The telephone vibrates with Ms. Coe’s laughter.
Then, the quiet truth:
