we’re having dinner this Saturday with some actor fellow, he’s been in some movie about pilots and now he’s in some movie that’s out about cars and he’s supposedly been in a movie with Dustin Hofftnan and one with Paul Newman.”
Pause.
“Daddy, do you mean Tom Cruise?!?!”
“Cruise, yeah, that’s the name,” Mr. Ebbets, a practical joker from way back, said. When he speaks to groups in the county he keeps them in stitches. And in this case he forgot to tell his daughter it was a joke when she did in fact come home a couple of weeks later and she told everybody Cruise had moved in.
So Ebbets the real estate agent claims. Maybe he knows something; real estate contracts are kept as hush-hush as any legal document, and brokers are tighter-lipped than lawyers.
So the dogged reporter keeps sniffing.
Like a hurricane spawning tornadoes, the Cruise rumors have roared and spun through town, touching down whimsically here and there, leaving devastation all about.
A lead comes, a woman who has definitely heard from a real estate agent that for sure, without a question, Cruise has bought a certain house. In most of these rumors the woman is not findable. In this case, she is found, she is called, and she reports:
